CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The Steamship
It wasnât difficult for Sarah to find the steam packet boat she would sail on to England. The British and Irish Steam Packet Company docked on Eden Quay, which was right off the street of the post office on the River Liffey.
Signs were posted everywhere advertising passenger tickets to England and cities in America. It was a waste of paper Sarah thought. Men stood on the street shouting everything the postings said for those who couldnât read. Sarah could read and she was very good at it but why bother to read when someone was shouting all the information at you?
Sarah heard a man yelling to purchase a ride with the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company but she was drawn by the man across the road who shouted louder and sold tickets on the British and Irish Steam Packet. Sarah felt the British and Irish company was more certain to get her to England being British. Besides, it was leaving that day.
Sarah crammed onto the dock with all the other passengers waiting to board. The air reeked of unwashed skin, dirty clothes, and bad breath. Very bad breath. Sarah covered her nose with her sleeve and pushed forward. She had learned tickets were sold in advance and could be used at any time within the dates specified. This meant the shipping companies didnât know how many people would show up to sail and would have to cut the line when the ship was full. The good part was they overpacked the boatâthough that could be the bad part too.
Sarah wanted to make sure she got on so she pushed in hard, swaying with the crowd as they pushed back and forth. It was all very uncivilized. Men shouted, women yelled, and children wailed. Sarah stood her ground. She kept her nose pressed into her sleeve and her mouth shut, less she taste the stench.
âThe B & I will leave on time. Have your tickets in hand. The gangplank rises in five minutes. All passengers holding valid tickets will then have to board by way of the dock gate,â shouted a ship officer.
This could not be good news, Sarah thought. Everyone began pushing harder and more fiercely. Yet, to Sarahâs good fortune, all that pushing helped squeeze her up near the front. But, no sooner than she got there, the gangplank drew up and began to close.
The screams and shouts from the crowd sounded with fear and desperation. The ship was already moving, pulling along slowly and Sarah was not on it.
Some people used their suitcases to block and knock others to the side as the crowd shifted direction almost in unison and ran towards the dock gate. Sarah followed. She copied what everyone else did. Turned. Ran. Pushed. She watched amazed at how people were now getting on the slow-moving ship. They were flinging their suitcase up over the wall and scaling up afterwards.
Being near the front, Sarah was pushed right up to the edge of the
